“Wait,” he said when the boy turned away, and hurried down the path to the gate. “Did you need something?” he called to the boy’s retreating back.

To his relief, the kid stopped and glanced at him over his shoulder, capturing Jordan with his large brown eyes. An abundance of dark curls fell to his shoulders, the light tan on his skin leaning toward olive. Beautiful and wild. Then the boy glanced aside and Jordan gasped, feeling suddenly released from a spell. He bit hard on his lip, instinctively knowing the kid had something to do with the disturbances in the house behind him.

“Will you talk to me?” he asked, though he would rather run, retrieve Bennie, and get the hell away from there. The boy came back to the gate. He stood almost as tall as Jordan, with a somberness in his brown eyes that belied his young age.

“I’m Jean,” the kid murmured in a slightly accented voice, soft velvet over Jordan’s nerves, a voice that would bring men to their knees when he was older.
