Chapter 9

The shadow darkened in the chaos overhead, gaining form. It rushed passed Jordan, icy cold fingers trailing across his face as it hurtled toward Jean.

“No!” Jordan screamed the warning, knowing it was too late. But at the last instant, Jean tossed the small bag into the void and threw himself on the floor. Jordan watched in disbelief as the shadow flew over him and dove into the brick wall, and vanished. The door slammed shut with a boom that shook the house.

Silence followed, and Jordan climbed shakily to his feet. His heart stumbled and he swayed, feeling lightheaded. Black specks swam in his eyes, but he held on, focusing his gaze first on Jean’s slight form where he stood, staring at the closed door as if frozen in place, then back to Bennie’s huddled body. People had died in that attic, but damned if he’d let either Bennie or Jean be one of them.
