Chapter 36

“Floating clothes moving about became an odd distraction, even to people accustomed to witchcraft and the supernatural. The entirety of my parents’ love story and my coming into the world and then being taken from her drove my mother mad. She did not live to the age she should have.”

“I’m sorry, Artemis.”

“Yes. They are angels now together, perhaps. Or it might be that she found another, since my father and I only brought her strife. Either way, they must be happy, if one believes in the Heavenly realm.”

“Some people don’t…even here?”

I was close enough to Artemis to feel him shrug. “Perhaps I have trouble believing in most things good.”

“Even love? If your parents loved one another, maybe now that love can be, when it couldn’t before.”

“I hope that is possible. My cynicism bothers me. One rather unfortunate consequence of being immortal and all alone is how often and how long one has to recall sad events. If only I’d been spelled to have no memories instead of no form.”
