Chapter 8

Royce lost all sense of time after the one hit. All he was aware of was that Jack alternated between every few hits, landing both that sting and thud. Jack’s voice still swirled around him, but it sounded very far away and since he was not currently talking to Royce, Royce didn’t try to listen.

Instead, he shrieked whenever the cane hit and blubbered in between. Sure, this would get him in trouble, Royce did his best to stifle himself. He bit down the tie and tried to keep quiet but it wasn’t possible. Every time Jack swung the cane, Royce howled even though Jack didn’t even apply it nearly as hard as he had in the past. Sometimes, he felt Jack’s hand rubbing up and down his back. Soft and gentle. A constant reminder that he was here. A tether to the real world while Royce’s mind began to float somewhere in the clouds.
