Adam laughed. “Your payment for tonight’s performance.”
“This is insane.”
“Like I said, you’ll get used to it.”
“You think I’m coming to work here, don’t you?”
“Phoenix, you really should think seriously about this. You could get as much as nine hundred dollars a night, depending on how good you are. Of course, that’s excluding your stage money.”
“You mean this stuff?”
“It’s a good beginning. They don’t always throw money on the stage, you know. When you count it up, you’ll be surprised how much is in there.”
Phoenix exhaled loudly. “God, I don’t know, Adam. Never in a million years would I have ever thought of making a living in burlesque. Hell, what if I fall on my face?”
“What if you do?” And then Adam said something that convinced Phoenix he might be making the right move. “Think about it, Phoenix, it’ll make a good hiding place. No one would ever think of looking for you in a place like this.”
