“Yes. And let me tell you, I hated being named after her. Just hated it. I don’t know how boys do it so often. It’s like I never got to be a person.”

“Same.”

“Your mother is Ivy, too?”

“No, but my mother is…“ Ivy hesitated for only a moment before she just said what was always so close to her skin. “A witch.”

“Like a bitch?”

“No, like a witch as in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Double-double, toil and trouble…” Ivy felt her face go red. She ran a hand through her shoulder length red hair. “It’s a long story—”

“Something like that usually is. But I’ll tell you a secret, too.”

Vale’s smile made Ivy lean in that much closer, “If your mother is a witch, then mine was one right alongside her.”

“What?” Ivy couldn’t help but step back. She’d been holding the cake box in her hand, but now she wanted to let it drop. “No way.”
