Chapter 27

If you don’t listen to the signs the universe gives you, Hazel remembered her mother’s words to her before she left home for the first time, then you will turn into the sign.

“I’m so dumb,” Hazel said. “I should have—”

“Done a lot of things, yeah.” Christopher ran a hand behind his neck with wide eyes. “We all should have done a lot of things better. But that’s why there’s such a thing as apologies. They work wonders. And you should go and do that.”

“I will. And I’m sorry, too, Christopher. I put you in the middle of something I shouldn’t have.”

He let out a low breath. He looked down at his hands and then nodded. “Thanks. I wanted an apology, too, but it’s really hard to ask for one. I…don’t mind being involved in family stuff, by the way.” He gave a weak smile. “Lord knows that I’ve seen my fair share of it. But it’s so much better to do the hard family talks as a team. Not as a tool to make the family dinner go haywire. Okay?”
