Chapter 5

“Perhaps,” Taden said thoughtfully. “In any event, His Grace should be warned.”

Nathaniel set his gorgeous lips, distracting him. “I won’t come with you. I told you that last night.”

Bryce stepped forward, palm on his sword hilt, but Taden lifted a hand. “It’s all right, Captain. I’d like to hear him out.”

“Are you…” Bryce began, but Taden’s attention was on Nathaniel, who’d touched his arm, sending his blood singing in his veins.

“Well?” he asked breathlessly.

“I’ve hidden something in the forest, my lord. I can’t leave without it. Allow me to retrieve it, then I may go with you.”

“Something?” Taden prodded at the odd note in Nathaniel’s voice.

“Yes, lord,” Nathaniel repeated, but with a furtive glance at the men around them.

Taden sighed inwardly, knowing he was more than likely playing the fool. “Captain, I’d like you to take the others and ride to Campton. Tell His Grace, Duke Hursten, we’ve found Sutherlin soldiers in the valley, as we feared.”
