Chapter 18

“Good morning, boys,” Pere said. “I hope you slept well.”

“Good morning, Pere. Yes, I did.” Although actually it was one of those times I woke up more tired than when I’d gone to bed.

Mrs. Daniels, the Papas’ housekeeper, bustled in and placed bowls of steaming porridge in front of us. She poured cream over Robin’s, and sprinkled it with sugar. Before she could do the same for me, the telephone rang from the hall, and she hurried to answer it. That was all right, since I was a big enough boy to be able to do that for myself. I had a spoonful of cereal in my mouth when my brother announced, “I had that dream again last night, Pere.”

“Oh? Which one was that?”

“The one where I got to sleep with a puppy.”

I froze and risked a glance at the Papas, wondering what they would say, but just then Mrs. Daniels came rushing back in.

“Captain Thomas! Mr Roddy! Mr Errol is on the telephone. Mrs Shani had the baby. It’s another boy.”
