Chapter 56

In spite of everything that had happened, I realized I didn’t want to die, not until I’d enacted a little revenge. I applied some moves my Brachi father had taught me and rolled free of him, sending him hard against the wall. I’d worry about him later. There was still Simmons, who wasn’t as out of it as I’d thought and who’d found his gun and gotten to his feet.

Chloe coiled in on herself, preparatory to launching an attack on him. Simmons’s eyes widened, and the gun wavered wildly in his trembling hand, aiming first at the python, then at me, and then back again at Chloe.

“No! No! Chloe, no!” I cried in a desperate attempt to stop her, but I was too late. Simmons fired, and the python’s big, yellow body dropped to the concrete floor. “She didn’t deserve that. Then again, she didn’t deserve these past years of misery.”
