Chapter 103

Cally resumed examining the old man. Canvas trousers stretched over his paunch and left his lower legs bare, and on his feet were shabby deck shoes. He wore a stained cap that looked as if it might have belonged to someone from the Brazilian navy at one time. When he tipped it back, Cally could see his hair was sprinkled with gray. The man needed a shave, his chin and jaw covered with grizzled stubble that made him look like someone’s grandpa. A toothpick hung from the corner of his mouth, and he chewed on it with casual disregard.

Cally signaled the masseuse to wait in the bedroom, and didn’t speak until she shut the door behind her. “Viejo sent you? Why didn’t he get in touch with me personally?”

The boat captain just hitched a shoulder and looked bored.

Cally decided to proceed cautiously, not that it was necessary, but he’d play along. “Name your fee, and I’ll tell you if I’m interested.”
