Chapter 9

If Robert felt that strongly against marrying him then Dalton certainly didn’t see it necessary to force him. To be honest, Dalton didn’t care much either way. He’d been informed of this arrangement for quite a while now and was a pile of nerves about it, yes, but generally had no objections to it.

From what he knew about Robert Thorne, which he learned by listening to others speak of the gentleman, he spent a considerable amount of time drinking in gambling hells and bedding pretty faces. That might be enough to turn anyone away from his hand, but Dalton considered what might be underneath that.

Like him, Robert was born the spare for the heir. If anyone knew about feelings of inadequacy and failure to his family, Dalton thought it might be him. Not that Dalton thought Robert was either inadequate or a failure. He didn’t know him well enough for such a judgement.
