He’d just stayed up after talking to Milo. He’d slipped on a pair of putty long shorts, his running shoes, and a red hoodie for a long, quiet walk around Ben’s neighborhood in the drizzle. It was supposed to clear his mind. Not so much.

Afterward, he had taken a hot shower and crawled back into bed for just forty-five minutes—to write, not sleep. But he had slept—overslept. Forty-five minutes turned into over two hours. He hadn’t set an alarm, and since he hadn’t told Ben what time he was supposed to be back to Lake Placid, Ben hadn’t gotten him up.
