Once Tom Alan calmed down from imagining all the possibilities his last thought presented, he hit the ten keys and took a deep breath.

“Father,” he began, regretting the fact that he’d gone porno in his mind before dialing Tsuchino’s digits instead of planning his spiel. “I’m not certain ten days is sufficient. I…um…I’m making progress, Sensei. Mrs. Mischen will attest to that,” he said, suddenly too formal. “I want to stay another week. I think it would really help me.”

“Is this change of plans you are struggling to propose,” Tsuchino interrupted, “completely related to improving your skating, Tom Alan?”

“Maybe not, but—”

“Give me a moment.”

Nobuo Tsuchino was silent far longer than a moment to the average person. “Otousan?”

“It may be wiser to bring you home immediately, Tom Alan. I have been considering it.”

“Yes. I know. I spoke with Kiki.”

“I spoke with Erika as well.”

“Yes. I know.”

“It has never been my intention to make your decisions for you, Tom Alan.”
