Chapter 63

“Then I guess I’ll come in.” She did and closed the door. “He came to me last night.” It was their first moment alone together, their first chance to talk since their chichi, who watched his daughter like a hawk, had laid down his law to them both. “What the heck are we going to do?”

“‘Heck’?” That really wasn’t an Erika-type word. “And you’re asking me?” He was lying on top of the covers on the bed. No TV, no iPod, no computer, he’d just been staring into space, thinking, when Erika arrived. She climbed on next to him. “Erika!”

“We’re going to be married…” She elbowed his rib gently. “C’mon. Where’s that dopey grin you can’t hold back when I’m around.”

He managed a bit of one.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t keep Father away longer so you and Milo could at least have a decent good-bye.”

Tom Alan said nothing; he just watched the little gold chain on the ceiling fan hanging above him sway slightly.

“Maybe I’ll let you keep him on the side.”
