“You don’t love her anymore?”

“Of course, I love my wife.” He was resolute, yet unconvincing; quiet, yet angry.

“She told me about…how she lost your trust.”

“We do not speak of that.”

“How come?”

“You have gotten stubborn.” Papa smiled. “There was a time when my word would not be questioned.”

Otousan was gray. Not just his pants and shirt, but his whole being, to Tom Alan. “Is that…good or bad?” He looked up into his papa’s face just a moment.

Tsuchino chuckled. “I have not yet decided.” It took him a while to go on. “Please, look me in the eye.”

Tom Alan obeyed.

“You deserve to be happy, Tom Alan. You have had terrible tragedy in your life, son. The rest of it should be nothing but triumph.”

“Okay.” A streak of blood from his mangled cuticle smudged his fitted powder-blue T-shirt. “Shoot.”

“Then leave it alone, Tom Alan.”

Tom Alan twisted his lips with consternation. “My relationship with Milo?”

“Your finger.”
