Chapter 7

“You’d be right.” I laughed, sat back, and took a long pull from my bottle before I continued. “So Hayley looks into it, right? And she finds they’re looking for teachers at the elementary school. And here’s where it gets even more ridiculous, because she actually knows the music teacher. They went to school together, too.”

“I know Emmett. He was a few grades above me in school. Him and my brother Jake ran in adjacent circles.”

It really was a small town. With five thousand or so permanent residents, there were plenty of people I didn’t know. But it seemed that someone always knew someone else, and the circles of friendships and families were interconnected in one way or another. I actually liked that. It was close without being too close.
