Chapter 10

As he waited, he texted his mom and Amaya. He told his mom he’d been sidetracked by some horses. To Amaya, he told the truth, and that he hoped she was getting some as well. When she didn’t respond right away, he grinned at the phone. She obviously didn’t need his good wishes.

He walked to the end of the ramp and peered up and into the back of the truck. The ramp wasn’t at a severe angle—that would have been stupid and probably dangerous—but it wasn’t an easy grade either. Not for someone who was already having trouble with mobility. However, there was nothing stopping him from climbing it now and saving himself some embarrassment later.

“Okay.” He sucked in a deep breath. “Stay upright. Short strides. Up with the good, down with the bad. Your knee is fine right now, so let the knee bend like it’s supposed to and absorb some of the shock.”
