“It’s not about a man,” he said, louder than he meant to. He reined in his voice. He took a breath. “It’s not onlyabout a man.”

“Then the evening didn’t go quite as you expected?”

“It went fine—wait. How do you know we spent the evening together?”

She rolled her eyes. “I’m your mother. I know everything. You think I didn’t see you watching him all night? Or that it’s hardly the first time that you’ve been unable to tear your eyes away from him? Or the way you two talked when you were standing at the bar, or the fact that he was waiting for you at the entrance when you said goodbye to me but didn’t want to make it seem like he was? Hell, I don’t think youeven noticed that part, did you? I’d even go so far as to say that he might have been worried you were going to change your mind. Did you notice that, Bryson? Did you see him fluttering back and forth in the doorway?”
