Chapter 9

“F-Fight you?” they stammered.

She nodded enthusiastically.

“One on one,” she beamed, “mano-a-mano.”

Was this bullying, Eirian thought; were they being bullied?

“I-I can’t fight you.”

Mauve’s smile seemed to widen still.

“Oh, in that case, that magcat of yours can fight my Penelope, then.”

Eirian’s eyes widened.

“You want our homunculi to fight?”

Mauve shrugged.

“Sure.” She paused, looked confused. “Don’t they do that where you’re from?”

Eirian blushed. It would have been nice to say one way or another whether people battled homunculi where they were from but they had no real idea; it would have been nice to say that they had friends where they were from, but that, they thought sadly, would have been a lie.

“I have no idea,” they confessed.

Mauve shrugged, withdrawing her arm as they reached the school gates.
