Chapter 12

“Asmodeus Flight has never properly been attempted across such long distances. What if you can’t find your way back? What if, instead of reaching the Ayanami, you get stuck out there wandering in space? I can’t allow you to take that kind of risk. What if something goes wrong?”

Doc Labyrinth brushed her complaints off with a wave of his hand.

“The only reason a human mind hasn’t assumed control of those meows is complacency. People were so happy to run with these innovations when it came to mining on different worlds, but no one wanted to consider the possibility of human exploration. What these governments are out there doing with my homunculi is a disservice, it’s criminal.”

“They’re not your homunculi,” his daughter reminded him.

Again, he waved her words away.

“The Foundation’s homunculi, then.”

Luna frowned.

“You know that’s not true either, not since you released several strands into the wild.”

Her father shrugged unapologetically.

“I made them open source.”
