Chapter 48

“I thought you only phoned Mauve.”

“I have a right to be involved in this,” Phoenix said, holding up the card from which her simurgh would spring forth.

Poppy turned to look at her.

“I’m not saying you don’t. I just…I don’t see why you would want to.”

Phoenix glowered at her.

“You’re stupid, Poppy,” she said at last with disgust. “I can’t stand you. But being here is the right thing to do.”

“I told her,” Alaina said, her hands folded before her, expression blank. “For an effective distraction, we require greater numbers.”

Poppy rolled her eyes.

“Great. Did you call anyone else?”

Alaina inclined her head.

“Miki, Yuusuke, Eloise—”

Hastily, Poppy held up a hand.

“It’s fine, I don’t need to know. I just need you guys to…”

Her voice trailed off.

“It’s okay,” Mauve said softly, reaching out and putting a hand on the other girl’s shoulder. “We’ll run interference, you two sneak into the Firmament Foundation.”
