Chapter 52

As the flames dissipated, Lilith sighed and pulled her book from her jacket, flipping it open once more.

“It’s almost too easy,” she murmured, and resumed reading.

On the grass, the guards continued to thrash in pain.

“Do you know how to open it?” Eirian whispered.

Poppy offered them a sour look, turning away from the locked door to her mother’s office, the rows of computers behind them silent, the desks empty.

“Of course I do.”

She turned back to the keypad on the door, and pushed the following sequence: 06, 01, 2005. The lock beeped, and the door slid open as Poppy turned back to smile mirthlessly at Eirian.

“My birthday.”

They nodded unsurely.

“Right.”

Hastily, she crossed the threshold of the room, rushing around the desk and turning the computer on, glancing up at Eirian as they stood hesitantly on the other side.

“Get in,” they whispered, “and shut the door!”

“R-Right,” Eirian answered, doing as they were told.
