Chapter 56

“Men who make meows have new meow now, big meow. Man helped them, Eirian’s father helped them. Had doubts then. Changed mind. Warned men. Other things in space where meows travel. Other things could come back, could hurt men. Men not listen. Man died. Mated with other man’s daughter. Taboo. Man died.”

He shook his head, and Eirian turned to look at Poppy, who stood trembling on the threshold of the door. Seemingly following Eirian’s gaze, the meow in their father’s body turned his watery eyes to gaze at her.

“Remember you,” he said weakly, “from man’s memories. Not right between you. Loved you. But not right.”

Poppy swallowed hard.

“I-I don’t need a lecture on morality from a meow,” she whispered.

A faint laugh escaped his lips.

“Maybe true. Not matter. For what is worth, loved you, man did. David Calohan did. Father did.”

Tears rolled down her face.

“I loved him too,” she said, her voice trembling, “even though it wasn’t right.”

Weakly the man squeezed Eirian’s hand.
