“Sir,” the other man shouted back, “with all due respect, the standard procedure for—”

“Standard procedure doesn’t account for the building falling about,” Biggs said, growing tired with the man’s refusal to listen to reason.

“Allowing employees off site could result in serious confidentiality breeches that might harm the company,” the man shouted, reciting the handbook he had been given his first day of service.

“If we don’t get these people out of here, they will die!” Biggs countered.

“I’m sorry, sir, I can’t allow employees to leave the building under any circumstances.”

They stood there, trapped in deadlock, the two men glowering at each other, rifles raised—and, then from nowhere, it seemed, Wedge appeared behind the man, knocking his footing out from him and disarming him, boot crushing his hand even as it stretched for the rifle.
