“Mostly, they don’t like that I’m dating Steve.” Again, Jase took an agonized breath. “They think I’m playing worse since we’ve been…together.”

“What? This has been happening since the beginning of the semester, Jase?”

Steve couldn’t believe it had been going on so long. No wonder after the first date when they lay in the truck bed looking at the stars Jase had never taken off his T-shirt. He’d told Steve he got cold easily, but in reality, he was protecting the team bigots.

They could hear the ambulance’s wail, so it had to be close.

“They only punch me where the bruises can’t be seen when I walk around campus. Where they say everyone would think it was just game bruises.” Jase took another gulp of air. “Coach says they’ll get over it. To give it time.”
