Meanwhile, his mother was hell-bent on the mission to convert him back to the straight and narrow path of life. It was as if she considered his being gay as nothing but a temporary phase. It didn’t matter that he had been living proudly as a gay man for almost twenty years now. He received zero support from his two older brothers and one younger brother because they acted exactly like their father. Sometimes, he wondered why he still bothered going home for the reunion dinner every Lunar New Year. Or why he put in the efforts to meet up with his family on some other occasions. His father and brothers didn’t acknowledge him, and his mother wouldn’t stop trying to turn him straight, which was annoying, mildly speaking. His sisters-in-law, nephews, and nieces were all stuck in the middle.

“Maybe it will be better for you to avoid your family for the time being,” Benjamin suggested.
