“Of course. You’re welcome to dine with us.” I was surprised I didn’t choke on the words.

“Beg pardon, m’lord,” the chauffeur said. “What time do you wish me to return for you and her ladyship?”

“No need for you to cut your evening short, Franklin,” Lord Pennington assured him heartily.

“Thank you, m’lord.”

“Oh, quite welcome. Happy New Year.”

“And to you and your ladyship.” He touched his cap and left.

“How do you plan to get home, Gr-” St John stumbled over the word. “Grandfather?”

“James?”

“Sorry, Father. I took a taxi.”

Lady Pennington turned her hazel gaze on me. “Perhaps you’d be so kind as to drive us home, young man?”

“Sorry, Grandmother. My Jaguar only seats two.”

“Pity.” She eyed me with interest. “You drive a Jaguar?”

“We’ll telephone for a car when we’re ready to leave,” Lord Pennington said.

“Very well, my dear.” She turned back to me. “Perhaps another time you’ll take me for a drive.”
