Chapter 50

A thought occurred to me. “Why is it you never call my brother Thom Tre?”

He looked away. “No one invited me to.”

I ground my teeth together. “I’m inviting you to.”

“How will Thomas—”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Oh, very well. How will Tre view this?”

“He’ll be fine with it. Look, Singe. We stand by each other in this family, and as I said, you’re part of the family now.”

There was a light clearing of a throat, and I jumped. I’d completely forgotten Tanner was with us. “Well, if you’ve no objection, I’d like to be there also,” he volunteered. “I always liked you, St John. I hope I—”

“I beg your pardon?”

“Nothing.” Dull colour swept up his cheeks, and he coughed. “Sorry. I must be off.” He stood and rested his hand lightly on my lover’s shoulder. “I’m sorry to have been the bearer of such sad tidings, but I know I’m leaving you in good hands.”

“I do appreciate your taking the time to tell me this in person.”
