Chapter 55

Robert’s eyes widened. “Truly?”

The sound I made was indecipherable even to me. “You are an idiot.” I could not restrain myself. I struck the back of his head with my palm. “Now, if we have that settled?”

He simply stood before me, and I grew uncertain as to what his response would be but I need not have been concerned. He swooped down, gathered me into his arms as he was wont to do, and smothered me with kisses.

“I love you, too,” I murmured now. I rested my cheek against his chest, listening to the solid, reassuring thump of his heart. No matter what Robert might say, I would willingly put my body between his and whatever might threaten him.

Later today, or perhaps tomorrow, I would ask my lover about the dog I was hearing more and more frequently. He’d told me it belonged to the neighbours, but when I’d gone to complain about them leaving the poor beast out in all kinds of weather, they’d huffed in annoyance and declared they had no dog…
