Chapter 94

“What I can give, I can also take away,” the man said, his words almost drowned out by a loud clap of thunder. The room was briefly illuminated by a flash of lightning.

“No!” Katerina screamed. “You can’t do this to me!” She would have sagged to the floor if Brendan hadn’t been holding her up.

“I already did.” The senior councilman removed his hand and rebuttoned his cuff.

Troy was impressed. The senior councilman had always come across as kindly and avuncular. This was a wholly different side to the man.

“Let her fall,” the senior councilman told Brendan.

He did, and Katerina sank to the floor, her cries of pity interspersed with screams of vitriolic outrage.

“Brendan,” the senior councilman said solemnly, “Would you and Ed remain down here to guard Katerina while Troy, George, and I go back upstairs? I need to call the police, and Troy needs to remove his son from hearing any more of this…” He gestured to Katerina, who had begun banging her fists on the stone floor.
