Chapter 7

“It’s been a long and horrible day, mostly,” Leo said. “I’ll scrape together some supper and we should all get some sleep. If we get up early, we can hit the hospital at morning shift change. Everyone’s tired then.”

Over a meal of snacks and as the locals say, pu-pus, they tried to give each other the best place to sleep; Leo had the master bedroom, as he said he hadn’t washed the sheets in a while; Em took to guest room, and Raven put his sleeping bag down on Leo’s old but long couch.

The storm raged all night, but the rain slacked off toward five in the morning. They were up and dressed and somewhat fed, by half past. As they dashed toward Leo’s car, Raven complained, “If I’d worn the fish nets, we’d have something for lunch! Oh, I think I stepped on a crab!”
