Chapter 18

“I never really did, I guess,” Jake said. “Just stopped going to church.” He took a bite of his hamburger and chewed thoughtfully. “I guess being in Iraq put it in perspective. I realized that it’s not really the church part that’s the most important.”

“Okay,” Gabe murmured. He didn’t know how else to respond. His parents had tried to raise him as a good Catholic but had given up when he flatly refused to go to church when he was fourteen. Jake casually talking about his belief in God was as foreign a landscape to Gabe as Iraq. Gabe had no idea how to navigate it, or even how much he truly wanted to.
