“Check it,” Hype said proudly, and for a second, Jake thought she meant the bruise, until he saw the fake tattoo she’d drawn just underneath it. “Pretty cool, huh? I did it myself.”
“It’s great,” Jake said, thinking of his niece again and doing his best to sound sincere. Hype had drawn a heart on her upper arm, surrounded by flourishes that looked like plant vines. The heart was split jaggedly down the center and made to look like it was bleeding. Fat, red drops trailed down her arm. The design looked pretty good, not that Jake was an expert, but it was so obvious she’d used red and black Sharpie markers that it was impossible to take it seriously. Although the bruise above it was serious enough.
