“Yeah, we’re pretty close,” Jake said. He wasn’t sure what would’ve happened to him if Alice hadn’t been there, or if she hadn’t picked up the phone that night. “How’d you get into this, anyway?” he asked. “I mean, tattooing.”
“I’m not totally sure,” Gabriel said. Jake could hear the smile in his voice. “Rob happened to know one of my profs. I think they went to high school together, so they were pretty good buddies. So he called her to ask if she had any students who’d want to paint a mural for a few extra bucks and beer.”
“I thought you didn’t like beer,” Jake said when Gabriel stopped the machine again.
