Jake blinked and stopped walking to look at him. “What?”

“Nothing. Sorry. You just didn’t look happy.”

“Oh.” Jake put on a smile. He hated how his face was so expressive. “No, nothing’s wrong. I was just thinking about something.”

“Something bad, eh?”

Jake shrugged. “It wasn’t anything important.”

“I wish you’d tell me stuff,” Gabriel said quietly. “I mean, I know a lot of things happened to you that you don’t want to talk about, but…”

“Yeah. I don’t want to talk about it. That’s why I don’t. You know that. We already discussed that. You said it was okay. So why the hell are you bringing it up again?” He knew that was harsh, but the idea of sharing any of the razor-edged thoughts in his head was terrifying.
