“I have a problem riding the subway sometimes.”


It was so far from anything Gabe had expected, the relief almost made him burst out laughing.


“It’s the noise. It…Sometimes it sounds just like, I don’t know. A helicopter, or something. I mean, it doesn’t really, but it’s similar enough that I start…I think about what happened. And then I can’t…” He shrugged. “That’s why I walk so much.”


“Oh.” Gabe was stunned Jake had told him and he was left frantically trying to find the right words to say in response. “I’m sorry,” was the best thing he could think of, and he really was. “That sucks. I mean, I’m sorry that it’s so bad.”


“That’s why you’re braver than I am.”


“You were on the subway, like, just a couple of hours ago.”


Jake smiled ruefully. “That’s because you were there. I did it for you.”
