Chapter 16

While he was sitting in his usual spot, I looked him over. He didn’t seem particularly tired. In fact, his cheeks looked healthy in the chilly morning air. He sat as if he were ready to bounce up and play, not curled into himself like before. Personally, I thought the kids were doing him more good than he realized.

I sat next to him with a sigh of contentment and watched Patty order Rick, Mack, and Lee around as they set up a table, put a black cloth on it, and added decorations around and on it. Patty kept gesturing for Charlie and me to come help them. We refused and sat where we were, watching their close-knit family work together.
