“You’re a shield,” Tarquin repeated. “I don’t believe it.” He groaned inwardly as soon as the words escaped his mouth. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that. Well, I didmean that, but not…not how it sounded. I mean, I’m sure you’re a shield. I just find it hard to believe. That you’re a shield.” He winced.

Tea patted the mark with the pads of his fingers. Then again.

Tarquin frowned. “What? Yes, it’s your shieldmark. What about it?”

Tea rolled his eyes. Then he touched Tarquin’s bandaged arm and touched the symbol on his neck again.
