“Or why?” Tarquin added. “Why would anyone hurt you like that?”

Five just shook his head.

“You really can’t tell us anything?” Prea said.

Five shook his head again.

“He’s a shield,” Tarquin said quickly, because that was true and he preferred Five’s startled blink to the desolation in his eyes. “The mark is real.” He smiled ruefully at himself. “I thought that maybe he was a shareblood wyvern.”

Ainya arched her eyebrows. “I don’t think a wyvern would do anything with a different species except eat them.”

“Well, I only came up with that possibility after I’d been mauled by a haldur,” Tarquin said. “I don’t think so now.” He gestured at Five. “But you have to admit, he does kind of look like one.”

Five rolled his eyes.

“Well, you do,” Tarquin insisted.
