Chapter 58

Tarquin hadn’t expected Five to have been promoted, let alone also named his personal bodyguard. He wasn’t sure how he felt about that, other than that his burst of elation was probably excessive. Still. He reached out and silently tapped Five on the thigh, and then mouthed, “Congratulations,” when Five looked at him. Five’s grin in response was shy and likely not as adorable as Tarquin found it.

“It’s still only a matter of time before the haldur break through the forest,” Ainya said. “Most of our allies who could come are here now. We’re still hoping for the kintara.” She didn’t sound hopeful, though. She glanced at Camma, who shrugged.

“My people will be here when they can be,” she said. “In the meantime, my guild’s been fortifying the city walls.”

“The firu warriors have arrived,” Elora added, “and we have what soldiers could be retrieved from the closest cantons.” She nodded in thanks to the ladies and the lord with them.
