Chapter 78

Prea unsheathed her sword and stepped beside Five. “We all know no one is going to the harbor.”

The door burst open in a blast of slivered wood.

Prea and Five both stabbed the haldur at once as it staggered shoulder first through the broken remains of the door. Prea drove her blade into its chest, right through its heart. Five rammed his sword through its eye.

Five yanked his sword out, but Prea left hers in the toppling corpse as she spun and sprinted for the trapdoor. Five readied his sword again, and looked over his shoulder at them only long enough to bare his teeth and jut his chin at the stairs. Behind them came the heavy thuds of more haldur running.

With a cry of anguish, Tarquin dropped through the trapdoor, abandoning Five. He mage-sealed it as soon as Prea followed, locking Five in the chapel.
