Father’s laugh crowed across the ring. He sent his consorts into the fray to join in. When I next looked, I saw my mother had appeared on the stone next to him, radiant and glowing. I tried to get her attention but she didn’t see me. I wanted to speak with her, and took wobbling steps toward the stone. Before I could reach them, I was swept up by dancing sprites. They fixed a wooden mask over my face that smelled heady and strong, like rotten cherries. I was cajoled into position, as other dancers strapped on their masks.
