Damien smiled in return. “I’m not everyone. We’re off the subject, however. When you said they followed you home, did the feeling go away when you got there?”

“Yes. To be totally honest, I felt it when I left work but I didn’t see anyone who seemed interested in me. When I got to my car it sort of went away, but as soon as I took off…well, I kept checking my mirrors to see if I could spot a car, the same one, behind me more than once. Then I stopped to pick up supper and when I left the drive-thru it was gone.” Lyle glanced right and left, then said, “Let’s go that way and then back home. It’s getting really cold.”

“I hadn’t noticed, but I guess you’re right,” Damien replied.

“Maybe I was hallucinating?” Lyle suggested after they turned the corner and began the walk along the street behind the apartment building. “I thought that at first, because of what’s going on at work, and I was probably right.”

“Going on at work?”
