“Honest truth, because I’m afraid for him. So many things could go wrong.”

“We’ll do our best to keep that from happening. The hallway lights will be off, as another deterrent to nosy parkers. If—No, whenOrsino and whoever he might have with him follows us, turn his companions to stone once they’re out of range of whatever light spills in from the library.”

“And him?”

Radclyffe snorted softly. “Unless he’s a fool, and he’s not, he’ll have his personal protections up. They might or might not harm you, but you won’t be able to breach them, so don’t try.”

“Got it. One or more stone statues to add to your collection, and one strong sorcerer that you’ll deal with.” Damien shot a hard look at Radclyffe. “You had better, for Lyle’s sake.”

“I, we—” he glanced at Felicia, “—will. I swear.”

Damien prayed he’d be able to keep his promise.
