“I’m going to call it an early night,” he said. “Mr. Trumbull asked me to go in before the store opens to help with some inventory.”

“You didn’t say anything about that at supper.”

“None of us said much of anything at supper.”

She made a small sound of agreement and nodded. “Sleep well.”

He had to go through the living room to reach the stairs, which meant seeing Pap sitting in his chair, staring out the window. Annie sat cross-legged on the floor beside him, reading aloud from a book resting open in her lap.
