Defeated, he shoved his hands into his pockets and backed toward the entrance. “Sorry I woke you,” he mumbled. He felt like a fool. For hoping for more, for putting his family in danger, for not being man enough to ignore his morality for one night to do what had to be done. “I won’t bother you again.”

“Levi.”

He stopped, his hand on the open flap, but he didn’t look back. He couldn’t face the pity he’d see there. “Yeah?”

“You’re doing the right thing.”

“Doesn’t feel like it.”

“It never does.”

“And if Otto really hurts someone? Is it going to feel like the right thing, then?”

“He won’t.”

Levi shook his head. “You’re losing your touch. You were more convincing last night when you told me to stay.”
