Chapter 23

His hair was greasy, matted, and completely black with dirt and sweat. His eyes were the same (light brown, he thought. He’d never call them “amber” again), but they were red from his crying jag and dark underneath, and the rest of his face was practically green.

There was a large bruise over his ribs where Tanner had kicked him, but otherwise his chest seemed fine, at first glance. Until Aiden leaned forward and looked harder, squinting at the mirror as if his glasses were failing him.

There was a mark right over his heart: a thin line so light it wasn’t surprising he hadn’t noticed it. It looked like a very deep bruise, just coming to the surface of his skin.

The doctor who’d checked Aiden over hadn’t mentioned it. He guessed it was so new, no one had known it was there.
