The angel shrugged with a tiny bob of one shoulder. This body will cease to exist, the eudaemon whispered to Aiden, speaking where the angel couldn’t. I will disperse and rejoin the divine. Eventually I may be able to choose another human to protect, or be reformed for another purpose.
“‘Eventually’?” Aiden parroted. “You mean, you die. If I die, you’ll die, too.”
None of us truly die.
“I’m not talking about fucking conservation of energy!” Aiden barked, his growing horror blasting out of him as anger. “I’m talking about dying. And ‘ceasing to exist’ means dying, doesn’t it? You won’t be you anymore. This you. Just like I won’t be me. I won’t be anyone. Because I’ll be dead.” He wished he had the wall behind him to bang his head against. “Gods, I’ll be dead.”
The angel didn’t speak, but he reached up and cupped the side of Aiden’s face. His hand was no longer trembling nearly as fiercely, Aiden noted, but there were tears in his eyes.
