“That’s what I thought, too,” Aiden said. “And then I ended up in agony on the floor. Trying to call 911,” he added pointedly to Greg.

“There’s nothing wrong with the phone!”

“Okay.” Cassandra took a deep breath then tossed her hair over her shoulder. “Okay. If what you’ve just told us is true—”

“It is true!”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “If you’ll let me finish—if this is true, there should be some evidence of it. Like the tree stump you said was there, at least. But there wasn’t anything. Just grass and dead Dark Things. And, and blood.”

“Eskandar said he’d done that so I wouldn’t get arrested. Or something.” Aiden realized he wasn’t even sure what the campus police would’ve done. “What do the police do with people who have Cracks inside them?”

“Eskandar?” Cassandra asked.

Aiden nodded impatiently. “Yeah. The angel. I gave him a name.”

“They get taken to a hospital and tested, if there’s reason to think they’ve been possessed,” Greg said. “It’s required by law.”
